One of the biggest hurdles people have to overcome when losing weight is portion control. People tend to look at meals as a pleasure rather than a necessity. It is important in your weight loss journey that you avoid viewing meals as a celebratory type thing. Yes, it is perfectly fine to have birthday cake to celebrate a birthday or an anniversary meal. However, you have to avoid viewing meals as pleasure in everyday life. We eat meals for the specific purpose of becoming healthier. When you view meals as something to find happiness in, you tend to eat a lot more than you normally would. That is why we must always remember to eat for a purpose. When you eat for a purpose, you are not as focused on how good the food tastes or how much you are getting. You are suddenly more focused on the quality of the food you are eating.
This leads me to one of the biggest reasons people eat too much at one sitting. Too many people eat food because it tastes good. It is crazy to think that people actually eat so much food to where their stomachs physically hurt. Just because a food tastes good does not mean you need to eat all of it. It is perfectly fine to order a dessert and eat half of it at the restaurant and take the rest home. In fact, I encourage you to split a dessert in half before you even start eating it. This way, you do not have to worry about “accidentally” eating the whole thing. This does not only have to be for desserts either. Most restaurants tend to serve way too much food for one sitting. Therefore, it would not be unreasonable to split your entrée in half as well.
Another great way to keep an eye on portion control is too look at the nutritional facts of the meal you plan on getting before you go out. This will make it a lot easier to make wiser choices when ordering your food. It also puts it in your head and it will be much harder to over eat once you realize just how many calories are in your meals.
Unfortunately, overeating is not just a problem when people go out. Many people tend to cook to much food for their own meals. This is where it really becomes important to know how many calories you can have a day in order to continue losing weight. Once you know this number, you can easily look at the number of calories that are in the things that you are cooking and compare them to your daily caloric intake.
In the end, it is important to remember that there will be times when you eat a celebratory meal and this is perfectly fine. However, it will greatly help if you go into the meal with an idea of the macro-nutrients and the amount you can eat. It is also important to keep in mind that you can save food for later. It can be more rewarding to eat less cake over the course of two days rather than eating the whole piece at on sitting and feeling stuffed.
